The other side

It’s spring time!   For some that means gardening season while others it means…RACE time! Not only does nature give birth to beautiful, colorful blossoms and lush greenery but it’s also a time that athletes come out of hibernation, out of the darkness – particularly runners and triathletes. Behind every athlete is an inspiring story. A story, much like nature that blooms into bright, beautiful colors.   When spring blossoms, some plants go through trial and error taking a few seasons before they can mature and grow into a masterpiece for your yard.   Athletes mature over seasons. Training and racing is not something that comes easy for anyone in fact, we have our trial and errors as well.   As I revisited Ironman Louisville last August, this time to watch my girlfriends finish their first, it was an emotional but beautiful day.   Being on the other side is a whole new level for an athlete.   We can understand the roller coaster ride and the challenge...

Pain is our strength

Image
The only one that knows pain, is you. According to the Merriam Webster Dictionary pain is the physical feeling caused by disease, injury, or something that hurts the body; a mental or emotional suffering; or someone or something that causes trouble or makes you feel annoyed or angry.  Regardless, we all have our pain at multiple levels and there are times it reaches the peak where we lose control of our bodies and mind.  We feel suffering. Pain has a different meaning for each of us whether you face pain as an athlete pushing beyond your limits during training and racing, or maybe pain is a daily battle as you’re fighting an illness, while some endure the emotional pain of losing someone you love.  Enduring pain is often a traumatic experience that we want to block from our memory bank when really sometimes, it makes us stronger in many ways. We’ve all endured pain at some point in life whether it’s minor or it’s severe enough for an emergency room visit. Some may ...

Under the weather??

Be still. It’s that time of the year again where sniffles, stuffiness, and puffy eyes hit our heads. Or maybe, we’ve been hit by the bug that likes to stir the tummy. If you’re used to being active on the clock like me, we don't schedule these unfortunate occurrences.   Sometimes these circumstances last quite a while especially if there’s inflammation, broken bones, or physical repairs involving some healing time that we don’t want on our agendas for too long. Sitting still is hard for a lot of us.   A week ago, I ran a long 9 miles. It was after work and even though it was a tough run through biting wind chills, I felt good and I was pleased with my run time.   My limbs may have been numb, but I felt good! After that night, things weren’t right. Imagine your body feeling great and wanting to move but puffy eyes, itchy nose, sneezing, and head pressure holding you back from doing much. Doesn’t sound like those little symptoms up top would hold the rest o...

Don't let fear fail you

Image
Looks can be deceiving.   Something that looks so simple can also be a mental obstacle course.   Sometimes, we can’t see fear but we imagine it thus creating unnecessary barriers.   Or, just maybe it makes us stronger.    “What ifs” are very famous words that cross the mind of the average human being.   Phobias often induce panic, stress, and make us feel trapped.   There seems to be a recurrent theme for me this year… control over mind – learning to find peace. Not many people will admit their mistakes or failures.   As I mentioned before, my PeePaw’s famous words “Do not let a failure fail you” couldn’t be any truer.   We have all failed at something but it serves a purpose, it’s a tool to strengthen our mind and body.   Preparing to study for my National Board of Certification in Occupational Therapy (NBCOT) exam was a heavy weight to carry around early this past spring.   Sitting for a four-hour exam is hard for me.   ...
